PTSD and depression of government officials who worked in front line during foot-and-mouth disease epidemic

Abstract

|
This study was to find out the influences offoot-and-mouth disease epidemic in 2010 on mental health of government officials, who worked in front line. The participants of this study were 406 government officials who worked for burying and disposal of lived animals during this epidemic and data were collected in their level of PTSD and depression. The results of this study were as follows. First, the participants experienced helplessness, serious injury of others, and horror in order as traumatic events. They experienced helplessness as the most traumatic event. Second, their high risk rate of PTSD was 34.5% and above mild depression was 16.2%. Third, the differences between means of PTSD and depression by demographic data were not significant. The differences of means on PTSD symptoms among groups were statistically significant in horror, threatened death of self, threatened death of others, and helplessness. The differences of means on depression among groups were statistically significant in horror, threatened death of self, threatened death of others, and helplessness. Based on these findings, the influences of foot-and-mouth disease epidemic on mental health were discussed and suggestions for interventions were made.
